FIFA’s Crypto Ambitions Spark Debate Across Football World

World football’s governing body is considering a bold move into the digital economy, as FIFA explores the possibility of launching its own cryptocurrency, tentatively called the “FIFA Token” or “FIFA Coin,” aimed at engaging millions of football fans around the world.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that the concept is part of a wider strategy to use emerging digital technologies to strengthen fan participation and generate new revenue streams that can be reinvested into the global development of football. According to him, the organization sees enormous potential in tapping into the massive worldwide fanbase through innovative financial tools.

The idea was announced during a special event held at the Mar-a-Lago resort in the United States, owned by former President Donald Trump. The gathering brought together figures from the cryptocurrency industry as well as individuals close to Trump, including his son Eric Trump.

The proposal has sparked debate among economists and sports analysts, with some questioning whether it is appropriate for a major sports federation to venture into the volatile world of digital currencies. Cryptocurrencies are known for sharp price fluctuations and financial risks, and critics warn that fans could suffer losses if the value of a FIFA-backed coin were to collapse.

Despite the concerns, Infantino insists that the initiative fits within FIFA’s long-term vision of making football more inclusive, modern, and economically sustainable. He emphasized that any revenue generated would be directed toward supporting football development projects at various levels, from grassroots programs to elite competitions.

If approved and implemented, the project would place FIFA among a growing number of major sports organizations experimenting with official digital currencies, marking a significant step in the sport’s evolution in the digital age.
