Referees Confirmed as Zanzibar Braces for Fiery Kariakoo Derby

Zanzibar is set to become the heartbeat of Tanzanian football on March 1, 2026, after the Tanzania Premier League Board officially confirmed the referees for the much-anticipated Kariakoo Derby between Young Africans SC and Simba SC.

The NBC Premier League giants will square off at the Amaan Complex, with kick-off scheduled for 2:15 PM (EAT). In a bold move that has heightened excitement around the fixture, Yanga — the defending champions and designated home side — chose to shift the clash from the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to the Isles, ensuring a unique atmosphere for one of East Africa’s fiercest rivalries.

With the spotlight firmly fixed on the derby, the League Board has handed the whistle to experienced referee Nassoro Mwinchui of Tanga. He will be assisted by Kassim Mpanga from Dar es Salaam and Hamdani Said from Mtwara, while Ramadhan Kayoko has been named fourth official. Israel Mjuni will serve as the referees’ assessor, overseeing proceedings in what promises to be a high-pressure contest.

The appointment of the officiating team comes as both clubs intensify preparations for a match that could significantly shape the title race. Yanga currently sit at the top of the NBC Premier League table with 28 points, showcasing the consistency that has defined their campaign so far. Simba, positioned third with 23 points, know that victory in Zanzibar would not only narrow the gap but also send a powerful statement in the championship battle.

Beyond the standings, the derby carries enormous emotional weight. Pride, history, and bragging rights are always at stake whenever these two Kariakoo rivals meet. With the Indian Ocean breeze set to accompany the roar of thousands at Amaan Complex, the stage is perfectly set for another unforgettable chapter in Tanzanian football.
