Dar es Salaam. This was no ordinary day for the ‘Wekundu wa Msimbazi’ Reds of Msimbazi.
From early Saturday morning, streams of red swept through Dar es Salaam towards Uhuru Stadium, where Simba SC celebrated Simba Day 2026 alongside the club’s 90th anniversary. It was a festival of history, football and theatre—a colourful bridge between nine proud decades and the promise of a new season.
Thousands of supporters filled the stadium on August 8, transforming the stands into a sea of red. Songs rolled across the terraces, flags danced in the afternoon air and bursts of cheers greeted every act of entertainment.
Founded in 1936, Simba used the occasion not only to honour its past but also to unveil the team entrusted with carrying its ambitions into the 2026/27 season.
The day’s most dramatic entrance belonged to Simba’s Media and Communications Manager, Ahmed Ally. Known for bringing showmanship and creativity to club events, Ally entered the stadium on a vehicle carrying a cage containing a live lion.
The spectacular arrival sent the crowd into a frenzy and instantly produced one of the defining images of Simba Day. It also set the tone for a squad presentation designed to feel more like a theatrical production than a routine roll call.
One after another, Simba’s players were introduced to the supporters. The loudest welcomes were reserved for the club’s new signings—the fresh faces expected to strengthen its campaign at home and in continental competition.
Members of the technical bench were also presented as Simba offered its fans their first complete look at the group that will lead the club into the new season. Each announcement brought another explosion of applause, chanting and celebration.
For the supporters, it was an opportunity to attach faces to their hopes. For the players, it was an early reminder of the expectations carried by the red shirt.
Yet after the music, pageantry and introductions, football took centre stage.
Simba faced Kenya Police FC in an international friendly intended to provide the perfect conclusion to the club’s milestone celebration. The hosts began brightly, pushing forward in search of an early goal as the crowd urged them on.
Kenya Police, however, refused to follow the script.
The visitors defended with discipline, remained compact and repeatedly frustrated Simba’s attacking efforts. Although the Tanzanian side created several promising opportunities, it failed to turn them into goals, and the opening half ended goalless.
The contest remained tight after the interval. Simba continued to search for the breakthrough, while Kenya Police stayed organised and looked for chances to strike on the counterattack.
Just as the match appeared destined to end in a draw, the visitors delivered a stunning final twist.
In the 90th minute, Elvis Rupia found the decisive goal, silencing Uhuru Stadium and securing a 1–0 victory for Kenya Police. It was an abrupt and painful ending to a day Simba had hoped to crown with a win.
The defeat also ended Simba’s run of four consecutive Simba Day victories. The club had beaten St George in 2022, Power Dynamos in 2023, APR FC in 2024 and Gor Mahia in 2025.
But one late goal could not erase everything that had come before it.
Simba Day 2026 will be remembered for the spectacle in the stands, the unveiling of a new squad and the celebration of a club that has occupied an important place in Tanzanian football for 90 years. It was a day on which memories of the past stood beside ambitions for the future—even if the final score provided a sharp reminder that football does not always respect the occasion.
With the celebrations now over, Simba’s attention turns fully to the 2026/27 season. The team has returned to Dar es Salaam after a preseason camp in Rwanda, where it played several friendly matches as part of its preparations.
The lights at Uhuru Stadium may have dimmed on a disappointing result, but the message from the red-filled terraces remained unmistakable: Simba’s history is rich, its expectations are high and its next chapter has already begun.
