Dar es Salaam. Uhuru Stadium turned green and yellow on Sunday as thousands of Young Africans SC supporters gathered for Yanga Day 2026—a vibrant celebration that blended football, entertainment and anticipation for the season ahead.
From the stands came rolling waves of songs, cheers and ululations. Supporters dressed in the club’s famous colours transformed the stadium into a living portrait of Yanga pride as the club unveiled its squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
But this was more than a simple team presentation.
The programme featured live entertainment, the introduction of players and members of the technical bench, and an international friendly against Les Aigles du Congo. Together, they produced an afternoon that offered supporters both a celebration of their club and a glimpse of its immediate future.
Among the personalities who commanded the spotlight was Ally Kamwe.
Widely recognised for his communication work and his role in mobilising the club’s passionate fan base, Kamwe took on a more visible part in this year’s ceremony. Accompanied by models, he helped introduce Yanga’s players as they walked onto the stage to face the thousands of supporters gathered inside the stadium.
His involvement added energy and theatre to the presentation. It also produced some of the day’s most memorable scenes, with supporters loudly welcoming a familiar figure whose daily communication has helped create a close connection between the club and its followers, popularly known as Wananchi.
Every name announced brought a different reaction.
Established stars received warm applause, while the introduction of new signings generated particular excitement. For many supporters, it was their first opportunity to see the players expected to carry Yanga’s ambitions in domestic and continental competitions during the new season.
One of those players soon gave the crowd another reason to celebrate.
New striker Peter Shalulile opened his Yanga account by scoring from the penalty spot against Les Aigles du Congo. The goal gave the Tanzanian side the lead and sent a roar through Uhuru Stadium as supporters celebrated the forward’s first goal in green and yellow.
For a moment, the afternoon appeared to be following the perfect script: a colourful festival, an energetic squad presentation and a debut goal from one of the club’s most closely watched new arrivals.
Les Aigles du Congo, however, had other plans.
The visitors recovered from going behind and scored twice to secure a 2–1 victory. Their comeback denied Yanga the winning finish its supporters had hoped for, but the friendly still provided valuable preparation ahead of the competitive season.
It also offered the coaching staff an opportunity to assess the team’s progress and allowed supporters to watch several new players begin adjusting to life at the club.
While the final score brought a touch of disappointment, it did little to silence the celebrations surrounding it.
Music and stage performances kept the stadium alive, while green-and-yellow flags, shirts and scarves decorated the stands. The occasion demonstrated once again that Yanga Day is not merely about introducing footballers—it is a yearly reunion between the club and the community that gives it life.
The 2026 edition will be remembered for Kamwe’s eye-catching role in the presentation, Shalulile’s first goal for the club and the sight of thousands of Wananchi filling Uhuru Stadium with colour and noise.
When the final whistle sounded and the celebrations began to fade, attention shifted towards the challenges ahead.
Expectations will be high as Yanga enters the 2026/27 season seeking domestic honours and greater success on the international stage. New players must settle, combinations must develop and lessons from the defeat to Les Aigles du Congo must be carried into the club’s remaining preparations.
Yanga Day may have ended without victory, but it offered supporters something equally important at this stage of the journey: a first look at the team, a first goal from Shalulile and fresh reasons to believe in the season ahead.
