Tanzania’s derby between the two giants Simba and Yanga had one of the most unexpected result; a global viral moment of the goal scored by Simba’s Clatous Chama on May 03, 2026.
From Nairobi, Lagos to Istanbul and Atlanta, Chama’s goal has received recognition from pundits, fans and news anchor. Most acknowledging the goal might be an early contender of the Puskás award.
“It is the kind of goal we all dreamed about scoring as kids, Clatous Chama for Simba FC, acrobatically and deathly executing a perfect touch to send a ball in over the goalie’s head,” said CNN World Sport anchor, Don Riddell.
“I have watched the Clatous Chama goal 6 times during the derby it deserves a Puskas award,” argued Collins Okinyo, former CAF Media Expert.
Scored at around ten minutes, the goal has also return Chama in a spotlight after a struggle. After a long and successful career in Simba within last season Chama moved to Yanga where he struggled to maintain his peak, forcing him to move again to a little known club Singida Black Star to return to Simba.
Speaking after the goal and the viral sensation, Chama said the acrobatic element of the goal was never planned and it was the first time to happen.
“I thought the goalkeeper had already come off his line. That acrobatic move just happened naturally, even I don’t really know how. I feel like that is the only goal I have scored in that kind of style. I can’t say I had planned to do it that way; it just happened,” Chama said during an interview.
Chama further explained that he knew the essential technical decision was to just touch the ball slightly as it was still in high kinetics and not provide any room for goal keeper to come near him.
The moment has also been a high note for Simba, who for a while had trouble of winning againts Yanga, a trend that has made Simba’s fan unhappy for a while. The good omen for Simba started on May 01, 2026, during the Muungano Cup, where Simba beat Yanga 1-0, the first win since 2023.
Although the match on Sunday, May 3, 2026, ended 2-2, the goal has made the moment worthwhile for Simba, and gave fans another point of boasting against Yanga’s fan. Several fans have started a campaign on various outlet to make sure FIFA sees the goal.
“African football fans, this is our moment. We must come together and make sure Clatous Chama’s goal gets the recognition it deserves at the Puskás Award,” said Ghananian football journalist Micky Juniour.
“Share the video everywhere, repost it, talk about it and keep tagging and major football pages/accounts with huge audiences across social media. Let’s make the goal go viral globally,” he added.
Simba through its official channels has started to print branded items of the goal including T-shirts and caps, depicting a commercial potential of seizing the moment.
On the other hand the goal and it’s viral moment has become like a salt to the wound of Yanga fans, who have been complaining about the state of their team, despite the fact that it still top the premier league table.
On May 07, 2026, Yanga announced parting ways with its coach, Pedro Goncalves, citing continuous unsatisfactory performance.
“Assessment was done, and it was noted that the team performance is unsatisfactory,” Yanga spokeperson, Ally Kamwe told reporters.
While it is unclear if the goal will manage to gain Fifa’s attention for the Puskás award, the moment has instill new confidence to Simba’s club.
