Tanzanian football has made history in African inter-club competitions after five clubs advanced to the second round of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
The achievement includes four teams from the NBC Premier League — Young Africans SC (Yanga), Simba SC, Azam FC and Singida Black Stars — as well as KMKM FC from Zanzibar, which competes in its own league separate from mainland clubs within the United Republic of Tanzania.
Over the weekend, reigning NBC Premier League champions Yanga SC displayed their dominance with a 5–0 aggregate victory over Angola’s Williete SC. Yanga started strong away from home with a 3–0 win before sealing the job with a 2–0 triumph at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. They now progress to face Malawi’s Silver Strikers, who advanced on the away-goals rule after a 1–1 draw with Elgeco Plus and a goalless second leg.
Simba SC also booked their spot in the second round with a 2–1 aggregate win against Botswana’s Gaborone United. The ‘Msimbazi Reds’ earned a 1–0 away victory before being held to a 1–1 draw in Dar es Salaam. Simba will next take on Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini, who eliminated Zimbabwe’s Simba Bhora on penalties after a 1–1 aggregate stalemate.
In the Confederation Cup, Singida Black Stars marched on after ousting Rwanda’s Rayon Sports. They now face Burundi’s Flambeau du Centre, who progressed with a 4–3 aggregate win over Libya’s Al Akhdar SC. Flambeau will host the first leg before traveling to Dar es Salaam for the return match.
Dar es Salaam tycoons Azam FC advanced in style, thrashing South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu 4–0 on aggregate. Azam won 2–0 away and repeated the same scoreline at home in Chamazi. Their next assignment will be an all-Tanzanian clash against KMKM FC of Zanzibar.
KMKM booked their ticket to the second round with a 4–2 aggregate victory over AS Port of Djibouti, winning both home and away ties 2–1. This is a major milestone for the Zanzibari outfit, who now face Azam FC in a decisive battle for a group stage slot.
Overall, the progress of these five clubs — Yanga, Simba, Azam, Singida Black Stars and KMKM — marks a historic record for Tanzania in CAF competitions. Fans and football stakeholders are now eager to see them push further into the group stages and possibly the finals, a feat that would significantly raise Tanzania’s profile in African football.
These successes also reflect the rising standard of the NBC Premier League. In 2024, the league was ranked fourth-best in Africa and 57th worldwide by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), with 266.75 points — placing it ahead of the top leagues in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Angola, Tunisia and Uganda.
