Tanzania’s fiercest football rivals, Simba SC and Young Africans SC (Yanga), played out an electrifying 2-2 draw in their NBC Premier League clash on Sunday at the Meja Jenerali Isamuyo Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The highly anticipated second-round encounter lived up to its billing, showcasing top-level football between the two Dar es Salaam giants, both based in the bustling Kariakoo commercial center.
The result sees defending champions Yanga remain at the top of the table with 45 points, while Simba trail in second place with 40.
Simba made a blistering start, scoring twice within the opening 10 minutes. Winger Libase Gueye opened the scoring in the 2nd minute after a precise assist from attacking midfielder Clatous Chama. Just seven minutes later, Chama doubled the lead with a spectacular goal, putting Simba firmly in control early on.
However, Yanga responded strongly after the opening quarter-hour. Sustained attacking pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Prince Dube capitalized on a defensive error by Simba centre-back Toure to pull one back. The equalizer came in the 50th minute, as Yanga defender Bakari Mwanyeto headed home from a corner kick.
Following the match, Simba head coach Steve Barker expressed frustration at the result, emphasizing his team’s strong start but lamenting missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
“We are disappointed. It’s a game we knew we needed to win to apply pressure at the top of the table—that was our intention,” said Barker.
Despite the setback, Barker remains optimistic about the title race, noting that the five-point gap could be overturned quickly with many matches still to play.
Yanga head coach Pedro Goncalves also acknowledged his side’s slow start.
“We had a bad beginning,” he admitted, before adding, “Overall, we were better than Simba and deserved the win.”
The result keeps the title race wide open as Tanzania’s biggest clubs continue their battle for supremacy.
